Birdseye: A Git overview
Who hasn't made a mistake in git and wished in hindsight that they'd have just run a few common commands prior to starting to get an idea of where they had left off... after accidentally committing to master. I'm certainly guilty of it. There is no shame or judgement to be found here, only solutions! So grab a camomile tea and release that stress from your life, because I got frustrated by a recent mistake and wrote a small bash script to summarise a git repository.
The backstory
It was a chilly March morning. I arrived at work early, with a noticeable lack of caffeine, looking to get a head-start on the day and tackle the ever-growing list of assigned issues head-on. I opened my IDE, my terminal, and set to work. It wasn't until an hour had passed, having felt I'd made sufficient incremental progress - making frequent and small commits along the way - I decided to take a break when it dawned on me... the aforementioned lack of caffeine and my eagerness to get started had united in evil and blinded me to an otherwise ritual-like habit of running a few git repository checks before starting on the days tasks. I had made multiple commits to local master. The pain was unbearable.
Okay, so it's far from life-threatening, but the point is, it was a daft and avoidable mistake had my morning ritual have been one command rather than 5 or 6. And better yet, if it was auto-executed when opening a terminal. So I wrote Birdseye - a command-line bash tool for getting a nifty snapshot of any Git repository.
## In time, it will likely grow it in features (which I'm doubtless will include fixing some bugs) and potentially adapt it into a more complete ecosystem, such as an Electron GUI application... who knows.
For now however, it serves its purpose and my needs perfectly. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or edits, feel free to open issues or contribute and open a pull request! In the meantime, you may bask in its presentational glory! Trust me, the code isn't that much prettier... but all in good time!
